Cathodic Protection Close-Interval-Potential Surveys (CP CIPS)

A Cathodic Protection Close-Interval Potential Survey (CP CIPS or CIS) is performed to assess the efficacy of the Cathodic Protection (CP) system over the entire length of the pipeline, whereas an annual CP assessment survey is limited to measuring levels of protection at CP test stations, risers and other above-ground appurtenances.  A CIS can provide high-resolution potential profile data that can aid in identifying areas where coating damage may exist, and/or where supplemental CP is required.  It can also be completed in conjunction with other Indirect Assessment (IA) surveys to assist in prioritization of coating anomalies that may require excavation & repair.  Proactive detection of these issues helps pipeline operators address potential problems before they escalate into external corrosion-related challenges.  Blue Steel certified technicians collect CIS data utilizing BSI's proprietary OPTICS system.
